On scalp lightening or perming: things to know
~ can my hair handle it, is it healthy enough???
~ definitely do treatments beforehand
~ do not wash your hair the morning of your appointment (or 24 hours before maybe, whichever makes more sense)
~ it is important not to irritate the scalp prior to applying lightener to the scalp
~ a patch test must be done 48 hours prior to every on scalp lightening service, the service cannot not be done if any irritation occurs
~ be prepared to be in the salon for a long period of time
~ lightening the hair exposes all of your natural underlying pigments, these pigments include; red, orange and yellow.
~ irritation may occur, such as; burning or itching. If this occurs please inform your stylist and they will rinse immediately. Please note, affects of a reaction/chemical burn don’t often present itself until hours-days post the service. It is a risk putting chemicals on your scalp.
~ if the skin irritation spreads rapidly, you feel faint, dizzy, have breathing difficulties, and/or there is swelling of the face or eye please seek medical attention immediately
~ powdered lightener contains ingredients that may cause irritation to some individuals
~ irritation does not always occur during the chemical service, often times blisters and sores won’t occur until 12-24 hours later, if this happens please let your stylist know immediately, be gentle with your scalp (don’t wash, pick, scratch or irritate). Seek medical attention if effects worsen.
~ you have now permanently chemically altered the state of your hair. It may feel and behave differently
~ we recommend using regular treatments, treatments that have bond building technology are best suited for hair that has been lightened using powdered lightener (k18 or olaplex are examples if bond building products)
~ any hair that has been lightened and then colored/toned is going to require some form of color maintenance such as toning shampoo/conditioner or a custom mixed colored conditioner. You can also come into the salon for these refresh services
~ shampooing and conditioning in cold water is best suited for colored hair
~ use less or low heat on your hair when styling
When in doubt, talk to your stylist. We’ve got you and will give you the best advice possible with the knowledge we have.
